Direct-to-Lab ($45-$600)

This can be quicker and easier than going to a free clinic or doctor’s office since regardless of where your testing is administered, your samples are sent to a lab for processing. Most lab centers offer STD testing as part of their services, and you can get request tests directly without a doctor’s order. Test results take anywhere from 1 to 10 days to process depending on the lab.

A lot of testing centers advertise low-cost testing, sometimes as low as $45, but once you arrive you’ll find that those rates do not cover everything you should be testing for.

Typical a-la-carte rates:

  • Candida $99
  • Chlamydia $89
  • Gonorrhea $89
  • Hepatitis A $59
  • Hepatitis B $59
  • Hepatitis C $59
  • Herpes 1 $89
  • Herpes 2 $89
  • HIV $115
  • Syphilis $45
  • Trichomoniasis $109

It’s important to get test for a full panel of sexually transmitted diseases since it is not possible to know what you’ve been exposed to. Often symptoms aren’t present, and if they are, they can overlap between diseases. Testing yourself for one disease at a time can delay or prevent finding out about anything else you may have contracted. Many direct-to-consumer testing labs offer comprehensive testing packages averaging around $250. Schedule an appointment by phone or online. Check with your health insurance provider in advance to determine your coverage.

Bottom line: going directly to a lab for STD testing is a good option which can speed up the process by eliminating a doctor or clinic visit. You’ll go straight to a lab to provide your samples and get results in about a week, on average.
